Smith-Emery Company: The TekonUS Beta product was tested by the Curtain Wall Laboratory of Smith-Emery Company, a full service independent test laboratory with offices in Los Angeles , San Francisco and Anaheim , to several test standards, including ASTM, as follows: 1. Surface Protection Characteristics : Aluminum and titanium sheet materials were coatedwith three applications of the Beta product and allowed to set for 12 hours. The sheet material surfaces were also treated with an anodized finish, a Kynar base paint and one was untreated prior to the Beta coating being applied. The coated surfaces were then sprayed with nondiluted aircraft engine fuel, hydraulic fluid and engine oil. The material sat for 48 hours then wiped clean. One sample was subjected to an abrasive rub before the fuel, fluid and oil were applied. Results: It was observed that the samples coated with the Beta product had less color variation and were easier to clean than the noncoated samples. It was also noted that residual oils were not present on the treated samples. On the samples used for the abrasive test, the samples did appear slightly darker than the other coated samples but were easier to clean than the untreated samples. The untreated samples in all cases were darker in color and difficult to clean 2. ASTM G-53-84, Accelerated Weathering: Two samples each of metallic coated glass and silicon setting blocks were coated with the Beta product. One sample of each was then exposed to light and condensation conditions using a Model DMC-R Atlas Weatherometer for various times and temperatures over one week, or a total of 168 hours in the Weatherometer. Results: Neither sample showed any variation from the coated non-tested samples. ^Back to Top^ 3. ASTM B-118, Salt Spray Test: Two samples of an aluminum extrusion were coated with two coats of Beta product and two samples were coated with three coats of Beta product. Onesample was left uncoated. All samples were tested for 96 hours using a 5% by weight concentration of salt spray at 95 degrees F. Results: The Beta coated samples showed no visual effects and wiped clean after a clean water rinse. The uncoated sample had an accumulation of discoloration at the edge of the extrusion. ^Back to Top^ 4. ASTM G-7, Atmospheric and Environmental Exposure: Two samples each of granite, limestone and reflective glass were coated with two coats of Beta product. One set of samples was set at a 45-degree angle to the ground and left exposed to the Southern California environment for 2376 hours from November through February. The other set of samples were set at a 90 degree angle to the ground and exposed to the same conditions and were further exposed to water, wind and a splattering of oil every 15 minutes for a total test time of 1488 hours from November through January. Uncoated samples were also exposed to the same conditions. Results: All samples coated with the Beta product showed no change in appearance and were easy to clean. The uncoated glass sample had no change in color but was difficult to clean. The uncoated granite and limestone had discoloration at the edges and were very difficult to clean. The limestone could not be totally cleaned. ^Back to Top^ B. Transit : After six years, Long Beach Transit coach windows corroded severely and required replacement. Available sealing coatings were tested. The TekonUS products were applied to LBT glass and polycarbonate (PC) bus windows and subjected to 4 months of normal weather and driving conditions. Each month the windows were evaluated and cleaned. The test using the TekonUS products was compared with other tested solutions such as, waxing and washing with various other cleaning solutions. Results: Other solutions simply did not work. Water spotting returns within hours or days. One solution lasted for about two weeks before the spots returned on the glass and could not be cleaned sufficiently to prevent the quick return of water spots. PC windows could not be restored. ^Back to Top^ TekonUS restored both glass and PC windows and treated with TekonUS and remained clear; after 4 months light water spots were removed with simple wiping. TekonUS is now restoring, sealing and the entire LBT bus fleet with the Gamma/Alpha treatment. LBT maintains its coach windows spotless with the TekonUS Beta/Zeta System. Cost of replacement and rider complaints have been eliminated. City now takes pride in its showcase transit coaches; visitors are impressed and rider surveys are very positive. Omnitrans, San Bernadino is also using the TekonUS system. Three years ago, thirty coaches were treated with an early formulation of TekonUS. Without maintenance, the windows remained free of corrosion while untreated windows permanently spotted. The fleet is now being restored, and treated with the TekonUS system for spot free performance. C. Mirrors : The leading manufacturer of mirrored bath cabinets tested three best candidates for sealing against black spotting using ASTM humidity and salt spray protocol. Results: No.3 had large black blotch in the center and black edges. No. 2 had spots throughout as well as edges. No.1 (TekonUS) was spotless. It appears that the ultra-hydrophobic surface forms large beads that cannot penetrate the exposed silver along the edge or pinpointed leaks in the backing. Whether it is salt, “hard”, base or acidic water doesn \'t matter because it remains isolated from the surface. TekonUS Alpha also transforms glass surface chemically, blocking access to oxygen, and thereby excluding hydrolysis. ^Back to Top^ D. Shower Doors : The leading manufacturer of bath enclosures life tested TekonUS. On one of the doors, we coated the anodized aluminum fame, vinyl seal and glass. The other door remained uncoated. For six weeks the FRP enclosure and doors were blasted with steam generated cycles to simulate 6.3 years of use. Results: The uncoated glass was permanently stained with stage 1 corrosion. The anodized aluminum was corroded with pits. The vinyl was faded, requiring acid cleaning. The TekonUS door was as good as new after only wiping with a cotton cloth. Glass was spotless; aluminum was spotless; vinyl was spotless. They have provided a written report and are preparing to coat all shower doors with TekonUS. ^Back to Top^ TekonUS raises the bar on standards for repellent treatments. ... These glass panels where treated with TekonUS to keep it better than new. The cafeteria is being called an architects dream. Frank Gehry conjured up the design With un-sealed walls of sand blasted glass, this would be a maintenance nightmare. TekonUS was a true necessity for the success of the finished product. Finger printing was reduced to a minimum and cleaning was Made simple. This glass wonder is a pleaser and a phenomenon in the architectural world . 1.First you need to clean the glass and make sure that the shipping coating has been completely removed. We recommend rubbing alcohol to clean deeper into the porous surface structure of glass. 2.In order for a hydrophobic coating to work for more than a few weeks, the hydrogen barrier must be penetrated. This can ONLY be achieved with a manual application. 3.To Create a long lasting coating there must be an elimination of the free oxygen atoms at the furthest depths of the glass surface. 4.A chemical bond must be made. This can happen by attaching carbon atoms to the last standing oxygen at the atomic level. When this happens, the carbon atoms spontaneously bond to themselves and build to the surface of the glass(alpha). The glass then becomes hydrophobic, it is not yet super-hydrophobic 5. In order to make the glass super-hydrophobic, the base coating needs to be protected. This can only be achieved by physically bonding polymers to the surface. The highest performance that you can get is with seven part polymer blend with seven different sized molecules(Beta). This of these as seven different sized marbles and they are in a funnel. What happens is that the smallest marble goes to the furthest point and the bigger ones are on the very top. Now the glass becomes a long - lasting SUPER HYDROPHOBIC surface. There is only one product in the U.S. that is can achieve this state, and this product is TekonUS. Let \'s not forget how important it is to prepare the surface. For any hydrophobic coating to work, the glass must be thoroughly cleaned by hand and completely dry and free of contaminant. ^Back to Top^ Words from TekonUS products user : Liquid Gold says Style Bath Style Bath has been using the TekonUS product for almost 4 years. The product is applied as follows: To prepare the glass for sealing, use a mixture of 1/3 parts isopropyl alcohol to 2/3 parts water. Spray mixture(in a clean spray bottle) over surface and wipe clean with a cotton cloth. Then apply alpha with a micro fiber applicator sponge. (Only a small amount is need). Make sure all surface areas are covered. Let stand for approximately 40 seconds. This is the minimal amount of time needed for application to bond; however, if it is left on longer, it will not disturb its effectiveness. Just wash in mild soapy water, rinse out and hang to dry or they can be placed in a dryer. When washed in the washing machine do not use fabric softener or bleach or dryer sheets. Do not iron. What is Micro fiber? Micro fiber is a revolutionary thread, comprised of wedge-shaped polyester filaments and a core of nylon. Made of both oil-attracting and water-attracting polymers, the fibers are woven into masses of tiny hooks & loops. The sharp edges of these millions of hooks & loops cut through dried-in stains, attracting and absorbing dirt and micro particles. How does it work? The difference between natural fiber and micro fiber is microscopic. Fibers in natural materials such as cotton or wool have rounded edges and their density is low because natural fibers are relatively thick . This results in dirt and grime just being pushed along the surface, and not removed, leaving streaks and smears behind The fiber \'s wedge shaped filaments follow surfaces, lift up dirt, trap particles inside the fiber, and eliminate the need for harmful cleansers. The capillary effect between the filaments and nylon core creates a high absorbency, which in turn enables the cloth to clean and polish at the same time. Only water is needed as a detergent to clean any type of surface. Tests reveal that just one swipe of a micro fiber cloth eliminates up to 99.9% of bacteria without chemicals and also prevents spreading of bacteria onto other surfaces. The “silane” compound is chemically reactive with both itself, and also the surface to be coated. The solvents serve to dilute the active silane ingredient to the right concentration, provide a way of applying the material to a surface and give the correct coating thickness. The liquid coating itself is a mild irritant, and typical of most organic solvents. The active silane ingredient may also be classified as a mild irritant, and should not be splashed in the eyes, inhaled in any great quantity or have prolonged skin contact. When the solution is applied to a surface the solvents evaporate away and the coating remains, gradually curing with exposure to humidity. The curing process releases very small amounts of methyl and ethyl alcohols which also evaporate away entirely. The resulting coating consists of a network of carbon and silicon atoms tightly linked together. The cured coating is insoluble, free of volatile residues, and no longer contains irritants of any variety. The surface chemistry of the coating resembles paraffin wax (which also accounts for its non-wet ability). Based on its chemistry, insolubility and durability, coatings of TekonUS can be considered to be physiologically inert and entirely non-toxic. TekonUS treated countertops, sinks and appliances are entirely safe for food preparation. ... Less is known about the evolving technology of “non-sticking” or “stay clean” glass coatings. The self-cleaning UV activated hydrophilic glass concept has been likened to self-cleaning ovens (now hard to find); whereas the non-sticking glass coatings are more similar to Teflon ® (now a household name). These coatings are categorized as hydrophobic or water repellent. Some are oil repellent (olephobic), anti-static dust repellent and chemically resistant as well. Original glass surface is extremely porous microscopically and attracts contaminants of all kinds. Construction mortar bonds permanently. Sprinklers can damage glass in weeks. Some repellent coatings can block the whole corrosion process before it starts. Repellent coatings can actually make the glass surface better than new. Water spots are the bane of house keeping. These coatings can help. No-stick coating is a value added feature that makes windows stay cleaner longer, shower enclosures easier to keep spotless, mirrors dust free, glass tables and doors less finger printed and easy to wipe clean with only a micro-fiber cloth. Liquid applied polymer coatings can basically fill the porous cavities of the glass surface with barrier resins that block interaction with water and air born contaminates. Water beads up and tends to run off carrying deposits with it. Remaining droplets dry but do not stick and develop into permanent water-spots. The light residue is usually washed away by the next rain. Gentle hosing is also effective. The glass feels slick and is noticeably easier to clean. Because soils of all kinds cannot adhere to the coating, all are easily removed. Even bird droppings and tree sap do not stick. An extensive study by NASA to determine the nature of soiling on solar arrays and the effe ctiveness of repellent coatings revealed some interesting facts. Weather born accumulations o n g lass and other surfaces is composed of three distinct layers. A tight layer bonds to the surface that requires rubbing agitation with solvent dissolution to remove. Next is a looser layer that is water soluble and can be rinsed away. The top layer is dust and can be blown off in high wind. When a repellent polymer coating was subject to the same conditions, only two layers developed. The top layer was the same dust. But the bottom layer was now loosely composed of the same contaminates found previously in the middle and bottom layer that bonded. It now reacted like the middle layer before, in that it too was water soluble and easily rinsed away. The non-stick coating eliminated the bonding layer altogether. NASA found that coated solar panels kept cleaner naturally and were significantly more energy productive and longer lasting. The Long Beach Transit Authority searched for years for an answer to severe water spotting on their coach windows. Rider complaints dictated a policy of replacement every six years. The coaches are washed every night and allowed to dry in the morning sun. Expensive water treatment system did not reduce the “hard water” looking spot problem. Analysis pointed to simple but accelerated hydrolysis. Water spotting starts with wet/dry cycles that leave dirt deposits baked onto the porous surface. This build-up is Stage One corrosion. The fixed pattern of spots holds moisture and support leaching, the hydrolytic exchange of minerals through the oxygen “door”. This leads to Stage Two corrosion that can be felt with finger nail. The damaged surface was polished out, treated and sealed with an advanced coating that permanently prevents corrosion and says clear year after year. Annual wiping with a compatible cleaner-repellent preserves the glass for the life of the coach. Rider complaints and replacement costs ended. A leading manufacturer of shower enclosures evaluated repellent coating of glass and anodized aluminum door in a six year accelerated aging test with soap steam and hot air cycles. An uncoated door, used as a standard, developed Stage Two corrosion on the glass and pitted corrosion through the anodized layer as expected. The coated door glass and metal appeared as new after wiping with wet towel. A salt water accelerated life test on mirrored cabinets, by another leading manufacturer compared the latest repellent coating with traditional sealing materials. For the first time, the mirror remained “as new”, no black spotting. Window manufacturers are finding that the repellent coatings preserve the new appearance of vinyl and as well as make the glass easy to clean. Sunroom makers can now coat all surfaces, inside and out to improve appearance, reduce maintenance and prolong the life of their product. Manufacturers can chose from a range of application methods to suit their work flow. Liquid coatings can be wiped, sprayed, flow coated or roll coated on glass. Vapor coatings can be applied in sealed chambers to pre-cleaned glass and cleaned afterwards. Glass with metal or vinyl assemblies can be wipe-coated clean at the same final station in about the same time as previously spent to clean only. Glass shops are simply wipe-coating showers, mirrors, doors and windows in the shop or at installation. One shop owner describes the new coating as “Liquid Gold”. Value added coatings can be the competitive edge improving product sales. Glazing contractors are protecting glass from subsequent damage from cement and paint splatter while providing a value added product. Architects are specifying low maintenance glass coating systems for curtain wall glass and metal. Engineers are recommending “repellent coating” for glass and metal near water features and sprinklers. A new home service provides a complete sealing system for the entire home: glass, granite, travertine, marble, stainless, aluminum, porcelain, tile and grout. With micro fiber cloth and occasional cleaner/repellent, maintenance is minimal and without chemicals. The investment is preserved for life. For home owners who “love clean but hate cleaning” this new generation of coatings may be their best hope. ^Back to Top^ ... Protective treatment, TekonUS Alpha , is applied to new or installed glass. This chemical process links oxygen with carbon in the porous surface, blocking hydrolysis, making it super hydrophobic and repellant. Water beads up and runs off like quicksilver. TekonUS Beta consists of multiple co-polymers that prevent hard water, soap and other stains from adhering to the surface. Dirt rinses away leaving the glass sparkling clear and streak-less. Cleaning is far less frequent and much easier, without harsh cleaners of any kind. Building maintenance costs are typically reduced 50% and occupants enjoy clearer visibility between washing. No acid, no harsh chemical detergents...ever...eliminates run-off pollution. . Glass is protected perpetually by simply cleaning with TekonUS Delta as needed. Curtain walls can be washed less frequently with less effort. The TekonUS treatment leaves glass anti-static, repelling dust. Mirrors just stay dust free. Super Hydro-phobic repels it all! TekonUS repellent treatment forms a permanent protective barrier to prevent anything...anything from sticking to the treated surface. Under a microscope, new glass is seen to be very rough and porous. Contaminates, oil, hard water deposits, finger prints, even dust cling to the surface. Water spotting can become permanently part of the glass. Prolonged moisture reacts with oxygen and leaches out minerals forming lime deposits while decomposing the structure of the surface. Acid cleaning accelerates this decomposition. TekonUS Alpha-Beta transforms glass at the molecular level creating a highly hydrophobic smoother surface that is slick, impervious to moisture, thereby blocking corrosion and permanent spots. ^Back to Top^ TekonUS coating on mirrors creates a permanent anti-static surface, more transparent than new. Dust that used to be attracted to glass, is now repelled from the surface. Years can go by without having to clean mirrors beyond reach. The TekonUS repellant glass is easily cleaned with damp micro-fiber cloth; quick dry wipe makes it sparkle. No need for ammonia based cleaners that leave a haze. Spray paint, tar, grease and tree sap can easily be removed with TekonUS Zeta. Cleaning with TekonUS Delta or Zeta replenishes the polymeric protective layer perpetually. For as long as there have been windows in buses there have been water spots. Among the challenges of operating and maintaining 375,000 tour coaches, water spots would hardly seem like an issue of much significance. It is. Motor coach owners and drivers fret over water spots because they can become a major irritant to passengers who want nothing more (or less) than a crystal clear view of landmarks, streets capes and passing scenery. And for as long as there have been water spots, owners, drivers and maintenance personnel have been trying to get rid of them -- without much success. No matter what \'s used to attack them, water spots always return. They also tend to get darker and, worse, they appear to have some kind of memory, coming back in the same places. Eventually, if an operator keeps a coach long enough, the windows have to be replaced when they become foggy from water spot build up. Everyone thinks they know what causes water spots: Hard water. However, there those who contend the water doesn \'t matter. The key, they assert, is to not let the water dry on the windows; the sun bakes on the spots. Then, there are those who say spots are the result of washing buses too often. Finally, there are experts who say spots are caused by using too much soap or soap with high acidity or alkalinity. To ameliorate these problems, every solution in the book has been tried. Hard water? Switch to soft. That doesn \'t work? Try a rinsing agent. Or, use a little more (or less) detergent. Nothing works for very long; spots always reappear. Next, operators have tried blowers to blow the water off after washing the bus. Unfortunately, blowers make a lot of noise, offending neighbors. Toweling or squeegee the water off was abandoned as a solution long ago because of cost. It can take 10 minutes or more for an individual to squeegee a 45-foot bus, and if you \'ve got a fleet of 50 coaches, that \'s 8.3 hours, or one person working full time all day to do nothing but squeegee windows. Washing buses less often doesn \'t work because of complaints about appearance, and there isn \'t an operator around who hasn \'t experimented with detergents. Some operators have even tried special waxes on their windows. The waxes usually work fine -- for a couple of weeks. So, what \'s an operator to do? Before we answer that, let \'s have a quick lesson in glass chemistry. Glass, as everyone knows, is made of sand that is melted, purified and mixed with a handful of ingredients. The major reactive chemical in glass is oxygen, which is the enemy that opens up glass to invasion by other chemicals. While glass appears to be smooth and impervious, in reality glass surfaces have microscopic hills and valleys. As water runs over glass, the oxygen interacts, leaching out potassium and lime within glass. These lime deposits appear white; in other words, water spots. Over time, a glass surface erodes. Minuscule river beds are created, resulting in spots returning to the same places time after time. So, it isn \'t your imagination telling you the spots are in the same place. New to the bus industry is the TekonUS glass repellant system that changes the molecular structure of glass, converting oxygen to carbon and creating hydrophobic positively charged glass that repels water and dust. With TekonUS Alpha TM , minerals will not adhere nor be leached out to form deposits, explains James Aiken , vice president, TekonUS of Tustin, Calif. For new glass, the Alpha-Beta-Zeta TM system is a three-stop process. A basic chemical treatment applied to the glass transforms the surface, making it hydrophobic and resistant to foreign materials. A co-polymer is then applied, filling the valleys and smoothing the surface. Finally, a cleaner used in periodic maintenance replenishes the repellent surface. For old glass, there is an additional step. Before the chemicals are applied, the corroded glass must be polished to its original surface. Think of it as sanding furniture to the original wood. New glass can be protected and enhanced for an unheard of service life, says Aiken, and glass already in service can be restored to a new longer life. For motor coach riders, the result is a travel experience enhanced with bright, stay-clean windows.
